shoes for flat platform pedals

Hi
I dont like using clipless pedals for commuting (too much stopping & starting) so im after some stiff soled shoes suitable for flat pedals. I find that spd (or similar) shoes tend to have quite a slipery plastic base and a very slippery plastic cleat cover so are no good for cycling non-clipless for any length of time. trainers usually have a sole thats too flexible.
does anyone have any ideas?
thanks

Football boots.
Grind the studs off then stick a rubber Philips sole on the bottom.0
