Shifting Issues

Whenever I try shifting up a gear I have to shift up twice and then back down once. The second upshift will cause the chain to lift up one sprocket and the I click back down once to ensure the deraillieur is back in the correct position. Clicking up once does nothing to shift the chain.
I have thoroughly cleaned the cable, sliding the cable outers along the cable to ensure the full length of the cable is cleaned and oiled, and the rear mech has been aligned correctly.
Am I just not giving the chain enough time to shift up and therefore impatiently upshifting again early?
What else may cause an extremely slow upshift, could it be the LX rear mech, or the rear cassette, or the chain?
Or is it something I haven't covered?

To set up the derailer set the low and high stops correctly then put in the 2nd or 3rd highest gear. Adjust the screw on the derailer where the cable joins onto the derialer until the chain lines up exactly with the gears. I've been servicing bike for years and only heard about this method recently and it works perfectly every time.0

If the method above doesn't work i'd replace the cables.
I had the same symptoms as you, cleaned the cables etc but it didnt make a difference, so I bought an XTR set for around £14 and the shifting has never been better.Scott Scale Custom

How long have you had the bike? Sounds like cable stretch, you should just be able to fix it with the barrel adjusters.0
