So it comes to that time again when the old bike has been beaten into submission and i need a new one. I have been looking at a few bikes but have only ridden the specialized hardrock. The bikes are:

mongoose tyax super: http://www.evanscycles.com/product.jsp?style=70321
specialized hardrock sport disc: http://www.evanscycles.com/product.jsp?style=70143
scott reflex 45D: http://www.evanscycles.com/product.jsp?style=70495
gary fisher wahoo disc: http://www.evanscycles.com/product.jsp?style=70587

what do you think? which is the best one for the money? can you give any more suggestions?

thanks loads

Mongoose would be top of my list, it has a much better fork (it's damped unlike the others) & has a lockout, the overall spec level is a bit higher too.

    Go test one!

  • Hi,

I'm also looking about this proce range... am looking between the Gary Fisher Wahoo, Trek 4300 and the Mongoose Tyax Elite/super.

First two are looking better for upgrading... especially the wahoo as I really like the Fisher frames... the Tyax super is much better set up to start but is a good few lbs heavier.

What is the intended use for the bike?

Hardrocks are a good buy, they are a tad on the lardy side, which is okay for heavy trail use.

I'd stay away from the lower end Scotts. In my experience, they tend to skimp on the components like hubs and bottom brackets, leading to expensive repair bills in the first 6 months.

Best suggestion, as has already been said, go and see if you can test ride a selection of bikes to see which one suits you.

Okay, then the Hardrock would be a good choice. Also look at the GT Agrressor.

iirc that would have been the Rockrider 6.3 @£299 - but that's full suss

I've not ridden any of the listed choice (but would probably look at the Mongoose first if it was my money).

i have had my hardrock sport disc for 18 months and i love it to bits.

OK, so the fork could be better and the weight isn't the lowest, but it feels really stiff and has coped well with everything i have done so far (including the black route at glentress)

The only things I have done to it are:
    Change the pedals to V8's
New Gear and Brake cables (the others wore out)
New Brake Pads (em...they wore out)

I am now at the stage of upgrading my drivetrain...finding the rear mech a bit sloppy for shifting, but to be fair it has had a fair battering after 18 months so...
