Too Cool For School...

Were you one of the cool kids at school or one of the nerds? A mate of mine was flicking through 'Friends Reunited' and, despite not having seen these people for years could still classify them as 'sporty-types', 'dude', 'nerd' etc.

So when you look back do you think 'What a guy!' or 'What a nerd!'?

For the record I cringe when I think of my teenage self (albeit with a wry smile). Crap 'rock' fixation, attempts to grow my hair long (not easy when it's curly - looked like a particularly pale Jackson 5 member) and an extremely gormless attitude.

Were you too cool for school? (Be honest... )

I certainly wasn't a cool kid, but I think (hope!) I wasn't a nerd either. I was crap at sport so that ruled me out of the in crowd. It was funny how your 'standing' in the playground changed depending on what the trend of the day was. At various points in school I was into horror books and films (when I was really young, honest), comics (Alan Moore, Frank Miller, blah, blah). I was also really into music - Bowie, the Zep, goth stuff, etc. All of these things became cool for a fleeting moment which meant me and my mates went from the clique that everyone ignored to everyone's best mate and then back to a clique in a moment.

In general though I'm a laid back dude who everyone likes!!! :P

I was always one of the first names on the 1st XV team sheet every week, so I was accepted by the cool kids but my friends were mainly of the nerdy type. (Nearly) Everyone went to a top university so the distinction probably wasn't that great between the cool and the nerds compared to other schools.

At Uni it's the same sort of story, I play rugby so have friends from there, but my close friends all seem to be computer geeks.

  • Fortunately my year at school was relatively small, so all the lads got on. I personally couldn't play footy or do athletics for toffee, but I used to hammer everyone at swimming, which eventually earned me some sporting kuedos (i've since discovered any sport that requires skill i'm useless at, but if it requires going in a straight line for a long time i'm OK). Although, I was probably considered a nerd. Got into Joy Division at about 14, grew my hair, wore leather jackets etc. At the time I thought I was too cool for school, but I bloody miss the place now.

My school didn't excel at anything so we didn't have too many nerds, in fact it was quite a rough school.

We had people at our school who were quite popular because they were "hard, obnoxious to teachers, misbehave etc..... basically nasty pieces of work!....", my group of mates got on ok with them to stop ourselves from getting an a*se kicking. Suffice to say that I regularly see names from the obnoxious ones in the local paper for committing various misdemeanours (some minor, but some extremely serious).

You then had a group who were just a bit immature, stupid and never got anywhere at school. We didn't get on with them very well.

The group I was in had no real obnoxious people, we got on ok in lessons, but p*ssed about a bit when we knew we could get away with it. Never caused any major hassle, we were probably a bit naive, but always managed to get by ok.

Mainly middle of the road me, crap at footie (no skill) but could run a bit. Realised I could run in my last year when I out ran some of the 'proper runners' in the sports day to set a year record - despite no training.....got into cycling after leaving school - bought a good bike just after leaving school and joined a club - got fairly good at it...and still 'ere............
  • fairly elietist at my schools. I was the sad one in the corner but had a mix of friends from farers to future Oxbridge with some geeky guys too. I was never the sporty type but was 'have a go' type

I was really sporty and competed in all sports for the school. I was also one of the swots. But, I also got banned from school holidays for drinking whilst on a skiing trip so wasn't too nerdy either.
