Fitting low riders

I have come across this piece of advice on the CTC website regarding the fitting of low riders to front forks.

http://www.ctc.org.uk/DesktopDefault.aspx?TabID=3977

What drew me to search for the correct fitting method was that my new Dawes Kara Kum came with them fitted and they didn't look right so I took them off.

From reading the CTC advice it would appear the shop I bought it from have fitted them wrong which could be dangerous.

If anyone is contemplating fitting low riders, or has bought a bike with them fitted, could you please ensure they are fitted correctly.

Worryingly this is often the LBS building the bike.

My wife's KaraKum came form Brazier's a brilliant little LBS and was fitted properly.

It really is bizarre though as the "wrong fitting" is counter intuitive and actually involves grubbing around a spares box to get the part!

Thats why I thought they didn't look right, they looked like a botch job.

Anyway I've fired an email off to Wheelies Direct who provided the bike and popped into my local Edinburgh Cycle Cooperative and had a look at how they are fitted there. One of the staff saw me giving a nice looking Cannondale Touring Classic and a Hoga Miyata the once over and seeing a possible mega bucks sale came over to ask if I needed any help. I pointed out what I was looking at and he sorted me out with the relevant bolts.

So instead of a £1000+ sale I left with a couple of packs of bolts for the princely sum of £2 :D

Mind I also bought a Park Tool Big Blue Book of Bicycle Repair so I didn't feel too bad.
