Only just bought myself a new bike after years of not riding, take a look here:

When i was out on the bike today (only the second time) going up quite a steep climb in 4th gear on a couple of occasions the pedals/crank slipped forward slightly make quite a loud cracking noise :(
Any ideas what this is? and how do i fix it?
Was planning on taking the bike for a service next week.

Sounds like it could be a worn cassette, chain rings or even the chain itself.

The bike shop should be able to tell you for sure though.

None should be too pricey to replace, although it's always annoying when you buy something and then have to instantly replace bits. I juist bought a Specialized Demo 8 and have to replace all the bushings and bearings on the rear end... and they are pricey :(

Certain;y opn bike shope, but [retty unlikely to be a worn cassette after 2 rides. Probably the rear mech cable has stretched and needs a little adjustment.

Just curious as to why you would replace stuff yourself after just buying..... Why not return and get the shop to fix Goods act etc etc...?

He has olny rode it twice but he stated in another thread it's 2nd hand.

My Demo is 2nd hand too so no chance of taking it back. It's only a minor annoyance as I still got a great deal.

Its still only 4 months old, I'd expect longer out of a cassette in normal use.

Sounds like the gear cable is stretched.

OK.. Great (not sarcastic), still sounds like cable stretch. Sorry about bad typing in last post... pda 8)

  • Thanks for the comments guys, will try oiling the chain, if not i'll get it serviced and ask the shop to check it out for me.

As CitizenLee said i bought the bike second hand off ebay, i have only ridden it twice but it is about 4 months old, the guy who had it before me said he hardly used it though and it does look like new.
I will be a little disappointed if it is the cassette or rings worn out after only a few months.
