Shoes and Pedals

Currently have a pair of egg beaters and SPDs and mountain bike shoes which i use for commuting, but i got a new bike last week (planet x if i hadnt already mentioned it elsewhere...) and i was wondering what i should do?
i only plan on using my Planet X on a sunday when its nice but changing pedals over is a pain in the arse and changing cleats on the bottom of my shoes isnt particularly fun (i have a pair of SPDs. My SPDs are on my commuter at the moment and my egg beaters are on my Planet X.
Should i invest in a new pair of egg beaters (which will probably be expensive?) or spend a little more and get road shoes and new pedals?

If you already have the SPD's what about the Shimano A520's. Quite an elegant road pedal._________________________

im trying to move away from the SPDs, as ive been using the egg beaters ive realised that i dont like the SPDs the egg beaters are a much classier pedal. Ive only out them back on my commuter as it was easier to change the cleats than it was to change the pedals and rip my knuckles open!BMC TM01 - FCN 0

I have SPDs on my training bike and Look Keos on my race and TT bikes. In all honesty the only reason i don't have SPDs on those two bikes is pretensiousness.
Hypocrisy is only a bad thing in other people.0 -

Ok, got it: But potentially you're going to end up with three different systems. Sounds like a bit of a nightmare to me. Personally I'd just pick one, two at the most so I've got some overlap and interchangeability.
so Eggbeaters and SPD's or Eggbeaters and something else but not Eggbeaters, SPD's and something else. Flog the one's you don't like._________________________

sorry forgot to add this bit in... ive only got two bikes, so the SPDs are my old pedals that i had knocking about (selling them to my mate when he gets his bike as they are a good entry pedal for learning clipless in my opinion!) the only reason im using them at the moment is i never know which bike im going to be taking in the morning (weather decides this!)
The SPDs are not really an option and at the moment are really only a stop gap solution.
So the question again (now that ive attempted to make things a bit clearer is) should i get another pair of egg beaters or should i get road shoes and road pedals?BMC TM01 - FCN 0

Intially.... stick with Crank Brothers. What about these, bit more of a platform for road riding.

Easy... buy a pair of Crank Bros Quattros... same cleats as Eggbeaters but with a bit of a platform. Nice and light and work a treat. I've been using these on my road bikes since they were introduced.

can they be used with recessed cleats?BMC TM01 - FCN 0

It depends how recessed. I couldn't use my quattro's with my specialized taho's without cutting the tread back.
I love my quattro's with road shoes and crank brothers road cleats.0 -

errr...... dunno :? The only thing I can tell you is that they seem, from the picture, to have a lower tread profile than my Tahos, which have two rubber strips next to the cleat position, which is what I'm guessing Graeme_s cut back. Graeme? And there's the mention of road cleats. What are they then: Graeme?_________________________

just looked on the crank brother website and the road cleats look like they have something on the side so they can grip onto the edge of the pedal giving more stability. (i think)BMC TM01 - FCN 0

Yes the road cleats do basically give you a bigger contact point, the actual cleat bit that clips in is the same on the road and off road cleats. The road cleats that come with quattro's will clip into egg beaters, and the egg beater cleats will clip into quattro's.
I didn't actually cut my shoes down, but I would have had to for them to clip into my quattro's properly. The tread on the shoes interferes with the wings on the quattro pedals.
Sorry, my shoes weren't taho's, they're an older version of the sonoma. You can see the shoe here, the pair I have has a different upper, but the same sole.0 -
thanks graeme i wont bother buying them then (thankfully read that just before my bid for them on ebay was entered!) I shall look into buying some road shoes and some other road pedals then.BMC TM01 - FCN 0
