bar lengths

is there any rough guides to length (or width, depending on which way look at it) to bar lengths? ive just bought a new bontrager carbon bar and its about 40 cm shorter than original FSA one, which i did find a bit wide/long, but had wondered if that was because it was a 'proper mountain' bike, and it was suppose to be like that? any advice welcome?

    Is the new carbon bar an xc bar? As i think these tend to be shorter to quicken up the steering. Longer bars give more control but slower steering as i understand it. Someone will prob correct me on this though :oops: .Think its more preference than anything, whatever you feel more comfortable with.

    its a xc bar, i think, got it off ebay cheap without thinking abt important questions like do i need it or will it fit! being a bit shorter to quicken steering seems to make sense, cheers
