removing chain rings

i have a 2005 truvativ husselfelt double and bash.
i fancy only one chain ring, and a mate told me that you can just take it off and remove one the rings. is that possible, because if it is it could save me a bit of money. :?

Yes just remove the right hand crank, take off the inner ring at refit. If you don't have a device the chain may come off to the inside, it doesn't always happen but if it does you can use the front mech locked into position with the stop screws to act as a rudimentary but effective chain device.
