i have recently recovered an old 1950's roadbike from a skip, and i fixed it up and it was working fine for a few months. but now whenever i go uphill or even push hard on the pedals the chain skips and sometimes comes off. its getting worse and worse and i cant ride it properly anymore, I understand it may be the chain becoming looser, but i just dont know how to fix it. will shortening the chain work?

if anyone has any suggestions or tips i would really appreciate it, i'm pretty new to road biking and mainly do it to save money on the commute

thanks in advance

The chain and rear sprockets could be badly worn, also, the chainwheel could be worn, if you've not replaced them then they will be worn.

Take the bike to your LBS and let them do an overhaul of the bike.... It'll be worth the money ...

  • thanks for the sprocket and chain wheel tips, i think that might be the problem. no point taking it to the lbs as i found it in a skip so could buy a bike for the price of repairing it, its a cheapy.
