I'm not very experienced but I got back into biking just over a year ago with a Trek 6500 disc. Have done well over 700 miles on it since (including 180 to Paris last week!) and I love it.
Have changed saddle because it sucked, tyres because they were rubbish and wore out very quickly and peddles because I've gone for Shimano clip-ins.
If money was no object I'd change the forks to something lighter with remote lockout and perhaps change the crankset but I'd keep the bike.
If you can afford the extra for the higher-up Trek 6 series I would but don't worry if not.
Hope that helps.

Hi
I have just bought a 6500, i nearly got the 6300 but went for the better shock that the 6500 offered. I've been on it for a month or so and have no complaints.
Hope this helps but i'm nubie too0
