Changing to Hollowtech II crankset

Hi,

I'm running a Shimano XT splined BB / crankset at the moment; it's nice and light and works pretty well. However, the chainrings will need replacing some time in the next 6 months or so and the BBs don't last that long either.

Looking at the prices of all the bits, the newer Shimano Hollowtech II set-ups are looking cheaper if you need to replace everything at one time. I see there's now a Deore option advertised on CRC. However, I keep reading about the need to get your BB shell faced / prepped - do you still need to get that done on a 2006 bike (Spec FSR XC). My LBS are not especially helpful and they charge the earth (isn't that why we all shop on-line these days?) - how much should this sort of job cost if needed (I could send the bike down with BB etc removed)

Are the new Shimano set-ups longer lasting than the "old" splined ones?

Thanks

if the frame has not been faced yes it will need doing. and the only way to find out is to get it dome.

And yes it does need to be done.
