Hey guys

Im buying a new 2008 GT XCR 5 from Halfords in the beginning of November.

Its coming with Recon 351, coil or air im not too sure. Has anyone had use of these or does anybody know anybody who has used these and are they any good?

Also the rear shock is Rock shox Ario 2.1 can really find any reviews on this, has anybody used a rock shox rear before and how did you get on?

Thanks again

  • The Recon is a good fork, and better than most forks you will find on bikes of this price range.I have the next model up,the Reba which similar and it has been superb.

Don't know ifenough about the Ario, frpom personal experience.but generally Rockshox have an excellent reputation for reliability.

    Good bike chioice.

    Thanks dude.

I have heard a lot of good things about the XCR and it has won numerous Awards for price and the I-Drive system.

Cant wait until they release it, first week in november they said.

I have been bikeless for two months now and itching.

Hi mate, I ride on Recons and they are awesome. Super plush feel, lots of options (on mine anyway) and, touch wood, totally reliable.

Mine are 85-130mm which totally suits our type of riding. What travel are the ones you are getting?

Thought so. Its personal. If you are going to be doing XC, they will be wicked. If you want to step it up a bit into light AM (ie. rock parks, bigger than average size obstacles on singletrack, poss. ocassional drop offs (nothing too hectic, maybe upto 2ft ish) then they will come into there own as the 130mm can swallow this kind of thing up and at pace.

Fact is the Recons good quality forks, so if you want the bike don't worry about them, they will be looking after you on the slopes!

  • These are fitted to my Trek Fuel 90. Both ends have lots of ajustement and work fine once you've got it set up to your liking. It's not super critical so you can just forget about them and ride. On my bike the fork's adjustability is overkill and the fulll 130mm produces some strange handling anyway, so I leave them at 100mm. The Recons make the bike a bit front heavy and a lighter 100mm fork would have been a better spec, but I'm in no hurry to upgrade. The Ario at the back holds its air well (mine's pumped up hard to cope with my 100kg), doesn't bottom out too often even though there is only 3 inches of travel on the Trek.
