I cycled over a stick today which popped up and got caught in the rear derailleur, the derailleur snapped and got pushed into the wheel. Aswell as that, and more importantly, the rear hanger is now bent in towards the wheel. The bike is titanium, can this be resolved?

I'm in London if anybody can recommend someone that may be able to fix this.

Thanks,

Simon.

  • A similar thing happened to me with a piece of wire/coat hanger in the road. Some bike shops have a tool that can straighten a Shimano hanger, I expect there is a limit to how much they can straighten and I don't know about other makes of derailleur.

all hangers have the same thread. most metals will take a beating before failing. but it does depend on how far it has been bent. if they can straiggten it it may be an idea to look for a breakaway bolt for the mech to hopefully stop the hanger getting rebent.

discuss with your LBS the options.

Luckily, titanium is probably the best material to withstand this level of damage - your LBS will have a rear hanger alignment tool - it screws into the gear hanger thread to prevent damage and then your exert pressure on the bar to align the hanger with the rear whee/frame - should only take a few minutes and cost £5-10.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • Much obliged gentlemen, I'll phone around this weekend, I don't suppose you know of/recommend anyone in London that'll be able to sort this.

    Thanks again.

Just get a shop to bend it back, only thing is you may have to agree not to sue them if your frame snaps (unlikely but always a possibility).

NB: I think everyone above has assumed it isn't a replacable one, if it is just get a new one if you can.

Not sure whereabouts in London you are but I had Dan at Sigma Sport in Hampton Wick do exactly this job for me in the summer after my carbon fibre framed bike had the hanger bent in transit.
