Looking at some Northwave Wintershoes but will overshoes with decent socks be just as effective?

Decent overshoes will keep your feet drier - water just runs down the top of the shoes. When it gets really bad, I resort to overshoes over the winter boots. Overshoes also keep the muck off your shoes too.

Depends how much cash you want to throw at the problem.
I've a cheap pair of Shimano overshoes (little more than branded neoprene sock with velcro fasteners) that does the job.

What do I ride? Now that's an Enigma!
  • Northwave winter shoes are WATERPROOF. Made of Gore Tex and are very warm. Have used them for the last 4 years and NEVER need to think of overshoes and have nice toasty feet when all around are moaning about the cold.

    Ditto Shimano RW02
    Keebo,
Semper in excreta sumus, solum profundum variat!
  • Both look like good boots but can someone please advise on sizing?

I've had problems getting Shimano boots to fit - some MT90s - I tried and subsequently returned a size 43 and 44 before settling on a 45 for my size 9 feet. The sizing on the wiggle site shows the differences for both Shimano and Northwave measurements. And I've always worn size 9 / 43 walking boots

Has anyone had to size up on either of these shoes (regardless of number of socks you wear).

I recently tried winter boots (Spesh Defrosters) but went back to overshoes.

I found the boots heavier and less comfy than shoes+overshoes.

I recently bought a pair of the Northwave Fahrenheit CR GTX boots from Wiggle. I’m normally a 9/43 but need a broad fitting. I went one size up to a 44 on advice from Wiggle – the boots are still just a little bit snug width- wise, especially with thermal socks but fit okay otherwise. BTW, on really cold days, I still need overshoes over the boots despite their warmth. Maybe I just have cold feet!

They’re good to use, not too obtrusive with stiff sole that’s nearly as good as the CF soles on my race shoes. HTH

I have winter boots (Diadora Chili Extreme Road - £50) ) with overshoes over the top. Nothing gets into my feet ever!!

Do you have proper mudgaurds on your bike? if not do you still get no water get in through the tops, even if you go through a very deep puddle (sometimes unavoidable around here) and get a giant wave splashing over your feet? cos if so i'm getting some

You're going to get water into the tops of any shoes no matter what make or material they are. My Shimano MT90s are goretex but they're not designed for wading!

I'm surprised no one has thought about inventing MTB wellies or gaiters  damn, I've just given spesh etc an idea!

Eddy, for comparison how broad are your "broad fitting" feet? D, E, EE? I much prefer the look of the Northwave over the Shimano, less white flashes the better.

Bought a pair of Northwave's recently after someone in my club wore a pair on a drenching sunday run and reckoned they were fantastic whilst I couldn't feel my feet!

I take (UK) size 10 and have them in size 46, which is the same size I take in both Shimano's and Sidi's if any use

Some of my formal shoes (Church's) are G which I think is close/equivalent to EE so pretty board.

  • Which of the northwave fahrenheit (from wiggle) would you recommend? Are they different models rather than 2006 and 2007 versions of the same models?

Northwave Fahrenheit GTX Winter Road Shoes 2006
    or
    Northwave Fahrenheit CR GTX Boots

I bought the 2007 model, bit more expensive but I liked the look of the newer ones, vanity won out in the end I'm afraid! 8)

I've got Shimano shoes and the Northwave boots, they are the same size in continental sizing (45 as it happens as well).
  • Got myself some of those amazing Northwave boots from Wiggle. As previously posted I'm usually a size 9/43 so I sized up to a 10/44. Both my feet measure the same at the widest part, however though the right boot fits like a glove (wearing two thin socks), the left is obviously manufactured slightly smaller (a whole centimetre smaller at the widest point) - so its a re-order and hope I can arrange a boot for my left foot.
