Newbie! - Add disc brakes to my Trek Y-11 - How?!

Hi all,

This is my first post, so be kind!

I've recently bought a Trek Y-11, 1997 I think. I'm looking at putting disc brakes on the rear to improve braking and hopefully reduce/eliminate the noise that comes through the carbon frame. There are no mounting points for disc brakes on the bike & I'm looking for suggestions. I'll hopefully have a spare rear swing arm to play with soon so any welding or drilling can be done to that one if needed.

I've seen an A2Z adaptor for this type of job. Does anyone know if it would work here?

Should I try to have a mounting point welded on?

I'm planning to start pretty cheap with a cable operated brake, keeping my V-brake levers. Any suggestions?

BTW, I'm a fairly lightweight biker.....crosscountry, medium downhills, and a couple of small jumps.

Thanks

    1) a rear disk brake wont do too much for you braking improvement wise on its own,

    2) I wouldnt try to attach a caliper to a carbon frame without the correct attachments points - you risk damganing the frame.

    3) a cable operated disk is not going to be too much of an improvement over a well adjusted V brake with good pads

Ie I think its a daft idea YMMV

Can't be done unless you buy new frame, forks and wheels. You can't add the mounts on.

    right it CAN be done.

Mike at hammerhead www.racing-green.com has supplied to a guy with a trek Y bike.

    from a little search.
I think one guy used a UniVersal HammerHead on a Trek Y bike... I gave him a sale or return deal incase it didn't work out.. he was obviously happy as he never got back to me...

Or he died trying it out! Ha ha.. Dangerous joke I suppose... sorry couldn't help it!

Yepp... drop me an email at hammer@telia.com and I'll sort you out.. like I said, if it doesn't work for you, then you get a full refund less shipping naturally!

    Later,

    Mike.
