Mix-n-Match Shimano Chainsets & BBs

I've got a Tiagra compact chainset and matching BB. The chainset seems fine and stiff but the new external bearings don't seem as smooth and strong as my old internal set-up. Could I upgrade to Dura-Ace or Ceramic bearings without compatibility issues or woudl I need spacers of some sort?

If I can upgrade easily, is the bearing quality much superior with Dura-Ace/Ceramic compared to my Tiagra?

    all Shimano external BBs are interchangeable

    AFAIK you can also use Acros, RaceFace, FSA etc. (but not the Truvativ GXP ones)

    I use Ultegra cups. I don't think the DA ones are quite as long lasting but that's just a guess really. The Ultegra ones have lasted well on my commuter.

    Having said that I'll be eyeing up the Acros ones next time around.
