wobbly headset

This seems to be a perennial problem with my bike. It's a De Rosa, with a carbon steerer; I've got a new Pro expander plug thing which worked ok-ish most of the summer (super smooth French tarmac, some tightening still required) but now seems to loosen up after about half a mile of crap British street surface. Then the rest of my ride is clunky and the bike seems juddery every time I apply the front brake. (I ride carefully and generally try to avoid cobbles of that makes any difference...)

Any tips?

Cheers,

Sancho

It sounds as if you are not tightening the stem clamp bolt enough. Make sure they are to the recomended torque. The plug is only for adjusting the bearings and a bit of back up for the stem clamp.

I experienced a similar problem recently with an FSA carbon aheadset bung I just couldn't get it tight enough to stop the headset creaking. Turns out the aluminium insert was moving inside the cap so I just couldn't get it tight enough - since changed to a regular alumunium one and it's OK. Can't believe you get such poor quality on a £60 headset. Agree about tightening up the stem bolts to hold the tension.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
