Which Steel Hardtail

Hi,

I am due an insurance replacement and have my heart set on the Genesis Altitude 10.
I was also considering the Orange P7 S 08 model but thought that the Altitude would better suit my needs of mainly single track, XC and some on road use.
I have seen that Orange are bringing back the Patriot for 2008 and they have a Patriot S model for £850

Does anyone have any opinions on the bikes mentioned??
Should I just plump for the Altitude or should I give the Patriot or P7 a serious thought??

My Old bike was a steel Marin and I would like to stick with steel, hence my choices.

cheers-- Neo

The Patriot is not a steel hardtail, if you can get a patriot for £850, I'll buy 3 thanks!

As for the steel hardtails, the P7 is good if a little heavy, Don't know much about the Genesis.

Have you considered an On-One 456 Inbred, there is a review in this coming UKMB mag. It's a very good bike & you can buy the frame alone for £150 :D

Yeah, I had considered an On-One but the insurance replacement is via Halfords and I dont think they source On-One bikes.

regarding the "patriot", I had meant "Prestige" as found at "http://tinyurl.com/27n674"
for some reason the Orange website is only showing the 07 range at the moment.

Halfords should be able to get you any bike, a friend had to replace hers via Halfords, it was a Claude Butler, which Halfords don't stock, neither do they stock Orange bikes, so in theory you should be able to get an Inbred going on that logic.

    Worth asking, just in case.

  • My P7 is a bit heavy, but it does everything barring alpine/downhill work. Have a look at Charge. They do lots of steel bikes (duster?). The P7 S is not that well specced for the money (though mine was an '06, they're a little better specced now). I've changed every component. =waste of money.
There are some nice steel frames available, but you lose out on the value of a complete bike.

    Rock lobster thirded, love mine.

Remember too that you get 10% off the prices shown at merlin if you don't get finance. Nice.

    Thanks for all the recommendations,
but I've called Halfords Insurance services and they have confirmed they can only source from major Manufacturers, so Genesis and Orange are fine but they can't source On-One or Rock Lobster bikes

If you look on the On-One website you will see that they do deal with Halfords on the Cycle2Work scheme so i see no reason why they couldn't help out with insurance replacement stuff too.
