Hi, I am thinking of doing the same thing, I cant remember the last time i used my large chainring (i have 22/32/42), so i have decided to down grade to two instead of three, i will make the middle and granny a little larger, as i am fitter now, i do not need the ultra low gears.
But I have less knowledgeable than the above guy.
Do i have to buy a whole new crankset to accomodate two chainrings or can i just remove the large one (i have Suntour SR)? do i need new derailliers (i have an old Shimano Alivio on front and a Shimano STX-RC on rear) because it will only have two positions (i assume i need a two gear shifter instead of three)? can i install a bash guard where the third chainring was?
also if i was downgrading chainrings, would it be advisable to upgrade the cassette to a 9 speed one, and how do i upgrade it, (i have a 8 speed one at present), is just a matter of taking the old old one off and putting a new one on?
and last but deffinatly not least is it really worth it??
Sorry if these are full on begineer questions, I am much more up for riding than fiddeling with the mechanics of the bike (hence the old components, they work /shrug).
Many Thanks

Right, as lonng as you crankset has removaable rings then yes you can. same shifter just set the stops where needed and it only moves between the 2.
re the change to 9 from 8, new cassette, new chain and new shifter required."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
