Hi

I bought a Spec Hardrock hydr sport a couple of months ago to get back into mountain biking after many years.

The bike comes with RST GILA T7 forks with 100mm compression. I have had a few accidents where i have landed off jumps and drop offs and then managed to veer right off course and on one occasion hitting tree head on.

I am looking to upgrade these as a matter of urgency and want to spend around £150.

I see that the Marzocchi MX PRO forks seem to win most of the best buy awards in this price so my first question is what one to buy out of the following:-

1) MX PRO
2) MX PRO LO
3) MX PRO ETA

My second question is how easy is to to take my forks off and fit these forks onto my bike.

Any assistance/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Any links to places to get these forks at the best price would also be appreciated.

  • Not sure the difference between the Lo and standard, but I do know,ETA,is Extendable travel adjust.Basically this gives you the ability to lock the forks down for limited travel.Might be useful if you ride on the road,or want a bit less bob, when climbing up a long hill.

Cheapest places for forks, are generally Chain reaction or Merlin, but take a look on ebay from time to time.

Have a look here for MX pro at £135.

To remove your forks, you will need to do the following:

    1) Remove front wheel.
    2) Unbolt front brake
    3) Undo top cap bolt on steerer tube
    4) Loosen stem bolts
    5) Remove stem.and spacers.
    6) Carefully pull forks down, taking care to catch all the bearings from the headset.

When reassembling your, new forks will need to have the steerer tube, cut down or you can add spacers.

As always take a look at www.parktools.com for advice on the procedure.

dont forget to swap over the crown race. and fit a new starnut.

  • Thanks for your advice guys.

I found a lucky deal of some ex display 2006 Marozocchi MX Comp ETA's and got them for £140.

I have also taken the wise step of having them fitted by experts as I would no doubt put them on wrong resulting in further injury.

    Cheers
