Upgrade or move on?

Currently have a 2006 Hardrock with LX cranks/BB, LX derailer, RS Revelation fork and XT Front hydraulic brake (rear is next on the list).
In a typical MTB'er fashion I'm looking at what to spend my money on next. After the rear brake I was considering getting a set of nice wheels as I can feel the standard ones twisting under me a little and they're heavy, but I can't help but feel its time for a new bike.
Is it worth upgrading this bike any more or am I just fighting a loosing battle against a budget frame?

Then maybe the frame would be the logical upgrade? What We Achieve In Life, Echoes In Eternity0

New frame does seem like the next thing on the list. Although, the Hardrock isn't all that bad. Its perfect as a little thrash around trail bike. Some new wheels would certainly make it feel lighter etc. Then again, a new frame would probably do that as well!
No point in buying a whole new bike.0 -
if it was me i would upgrade your hardrock until you cant any more , then buy a frame and move all the parts over to it......0

Hmmm, not really a route I had considered.
About much would I be looking at to buy a good hardtail and how much for a good full susser frame?0 -
what type of riding? and do you mind second hand? if not have a look on ebay they have some nice frames going cant really say a price, just have a look around ebay, evans and wiggle0

Not really sure what I'd class the riding as. I cycle up a mountain and down the other side hitting any bump or puddle I can find, no huge drops, jumps or anything crazy. All mountain?
Not too bothered about second hand but I'd be very weary of a frame second hand when I can't inspect it in person.0 -
I'm with these guys on this and have just bought a new hardtail frame myself as my entry level bulldozer is boring me now. I have done this as I want to build it up with a custom spec (ie what I want and need which in my case and with this frame is light weight components) for XC/ AM riding - ie if I went out and bought the full bike with this frame the components wouldn't be as good as I can get searching around ebay etc and building my perfect ride myself. Notably, and like jacktheoc said I upgraded my forks (considerably) before buying the new frame and will be upgrading the wheels and brakes in the next couple of weeks.
So I would say a new frame and then work from that - you could cross over components and begin riding now (assuming forks are travel compatible etc.) or start collecting some 'top end' (if thats your thing) components to put on it so you can unleash it in all its glory in a few months or whatever. Xmas coming up so get writing your list of pressies out!!"If you think straight enough, you can see round corners"0 -
yeh sounds like all mountain type riding, if you would want a full sus have a look for a giant reign, i have one and they are excellent all mountain frame, you should be able to get a next to new fram on ebay for £300-£400.0

Still unsure of what exactly to do. I use my bike for getting around and since theres no off road sections anywhere near me I use it to train on the road untill I can convince someone to give me lift somewhere. If I was getting a full sus bike I fear it would be a pain with the on road stuff and I'd regret getting rid of the Hardrock.
How much has pedal bob been eliminated?
Is there anywhere with a wide selection of frames for sale? Ebay is very hit and miss and finding the frame you want and in the size you want is going to be a night mare.0 -
I'd go the upgrade route,i have a carrera kraken and changed the wheels first to hope pro 3's ,totally transformed the bike !!! :P hope mini brakes where well worth the money . the frame is actually pretty good so not sure if i will change it. but if i do it will be a long time0

Have you thought about upgrading the frame, putting all your nice gear on it and using it for offroading with your mate and then get some really cheap stuff to put on your hardrock to use on the road. Dpends on how flush you are really. What We Achieve In Life, Echoes In Eternity0 -
