Hi all, new here so hope this isnt too dumb a question.

Whilst doing a bit of shed fettling, I came accross a 30/11 8 speed XT cassette and was thinking of putting on the road bike to ase the impact of some of the hills around here (lake district).

So, if I swap my short cage rear mech for a very old long cage XT job and use a longer chain will it work?

The bike currently runs 8 speed 25/12 with a triple 50/39/30 with sora 8 speed shifters.

This may seem excessive to some flatlanders, but getting home over whinlatter and fangs brow really hurts with 100 in your legs

Thanks

The long cage mech will also allow you to swap the 30 chainring for a 24, for a real bailout gear of the sort I've really appreciated in the past - eg Kirkstone (from N) with 200 miles in my legs. :)
