Pedals - a grinding noise

Fiddling about with my pedals, I notice they make a horrible (but very quiet) grinding noise when I turn them... I guess it's the bearings. Can I replace them easily?

1) These are the pedals that came with my (not very expensive) bike

2) I was trying taking them off to see if I could :oops:

    Um. Just realised that I can get better pedals for a fiver! Hurrah for internet!

    Are the pedals with clips on one side, and a normal cage on the other useful? Or just gimmicky?

    Better pedals for a fiver? What are the current ones made out of? Cardboard?
