I'm currently using a polar buff under my helmet - you can roll the fleecy bit into a kind of headband to keep your ears warm and just have the thin, wicking fabric on top of your head, sort of like the bottom right picture here. It's pretty effective, though not particularly cheap.Even if the voices aren't real, they have some very good ideas.0

Razzle Dazzle do a set of deely-boppers with ear muffs attached for £1.99.0

I found a thin beanie for £5 in my local outdooors shop.Does the job,no need to spend more, for a cycling specific one.2006 Giant XTC
2010 Giant Defy Advanced

2016 Pinnacle Lithium 4

As a temporary measure last year I cut off the sleeves of an old cotton longsleeve t-shirt. Once I'd cut the sleeve down to size and a few stretches later it covers my ears and forehead nicely and sits well under the helmet. Zero cost!0

Just use a regular buff...well i say i use, i bought it and not used it yet as i find once you get going you warm up soon enough.0

Helly Hansen do a hat made of their Lifa material. Fits under your helmet and wicks sweat away as well."Internet Forums - an amazing world where outright falsehoods become cyber-facts with a few witty key taps and a carefully placed emoticon."0

Or you could just get a regular BUFF and roll the bottom of it up around your ears like I do.
They cost about £10, but you get a very versatile garment that can used in place of 5 hats, and 2 scarfs. And it's made from windproof material. It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.0 -
The Sealskinz wind-proof one is quite warm and only a tenner.

Wear a helmet with less vents in it and get a decent neck gaiter and pull it up to keep warm (not over your eyes though)

Places like Blacks do them and they keep you warm when it get cold.
It's not cold enough for one yet though
You can get these cheaper than £15 I'm sure but stick with a decent brand which is Polartec and windproof rather than some cheaper ones which don't offer much protection from the cold wind/snow
I tried a Nike thin under helmet thing but much prefer to wear the helmet without it.
Some people also put cling film to block vents in winter for more insulation but it would really have to be Arctic conditions to get the benefit of thatDave S0
