bottom bracket trouble?

hi,
i was riding ( saracan xile 2005) when i made a hard pedal and heard a sort of snapping sound around the bottom bracket area, (i dont know what make the bottom bracket is). after this noise happened whenever i pedaled there is a nasty creaking noise. i have tightened up the cranks and there is still this problem so i assume it is the bottom bracket.
can anyone enlighten me as to what has happened and if it can be fixed or if i should just buy a new bottom bracket?

buy a new one mate, that was the bearings in the bottom bracket crunching.
buy a decent one as well, it'll save you forking out for another one if you buy cheap0 -
ok thanks, how do i measure what size i need for a new one without taking out the old bb, also how do i know that the current cranks (truativ blaze 32/22) will fit on the new bb? thanks again0
