Turbo trainer or gym exercise bike this winter!?

Hi all. Looking for some words of wisdom really. I started racing XC this year sort of by accident really but now I`m totally hooked and want to prepare on next season. Just been planning an annual training plan and trying to identify my needs...
Anyway long story short one area I plan to work on is speed skills by doing exercises such as spin ups and isolated leg. What I want to know is, if I can just use the exercice bikes at the the gym or is it more beneficial to use a turbo trainer since you can achieve a "real cycling position". Also it is likely that I may be unable to get outdoors on the bike for workouts from time to time...would it also therfore be more beneficial to use an indoor trainer than the exercise bike!?
I hope this makes sense.
Any pointer appreciated. Also can anyone recommend a trainer around the £100 mark or a good one to look out for on ebay.
many thanks
Dave

personally I prefer to use my own bike on a turbo. The gym bikes just don't feel right.0
