Now i know you need special insurance to use your car for work purposes, does this apply to bikes as well?

do i need special insurance to go from office to office? (assuming i had insurance!)

  • Shouldn't that be covered by the company policy?

I occasionaly used to drive between locations and it was the company's policy I was covered by even though I only went about 10 times over 2 years.

    Possibly!

Unlike car insurance there doesn't appear to be any standard insurance classes i.e. Social Domestic and Pleasure or Business Class 1 etc.

    Policies such as Butterworths exclude:

...any pedal cycle used for trade, business or professional purposes

    Others simply exlude:

..when using the cycle for hire, reward, courier services or for carrying passengers.

So my reading of Butterworths is if you have [ever] used the cycle for business purposes then it's not covered!

There is also consideration of third party cover when on business, and insuring anything business related you may be carrying i.e. company laptop.

Some or all of which may be covered by other policies such as home or business insurance.

If in doubt speak to your insurer or a specialist broker!
