New Wheel Advice...

Gonna treat my self to some new hoops.

The shortlist is as follows -

Kysrium ES's.

Campag Shamal's.

Fulcrum 1's.

Fulcrum 0's.

Despite the fact that they're GOLD, weight wise, and, from what I can gather, performance wise, the Shamal's have nudged ahead in my mind at the moment, until I get up, make a coffee, sit down only to find that now, the F-0's perfectly match my colour scheme etc etc... basically I can't decide. I've only ridden F-1's from this list, and they were excellent., but I hear that the ES's are a great balance between weight, stiffness and reliability.

Any advice appreciated - I don't think I can go too far wrong with any of these, but thought I'd throw it out there.

Cheers.

The Shamal Ultras will also be available in a titanium colour scheme next year which may influence your choice. They are the lightest of the Campag (and I include Fulcrum in this) range of factory built aluminium wheels.

Whoever told you Kysriums are a great balance between weight, stiffness and reliability is a damned liar.

What you don't say is what you intend using them for?

Cheers for the reply. I've already taken the plunge - the Shamals....

Ok - they're gold, but the bike's black/red, so it won't look too outta place.

Use is the normal Sunday run, training rides and maybe some racing/sportives next year. I think the Shamals are good value at just over £500 from Parker, and no doubt the 08's will be nearer £650-700 when they come out anyway, which is a little out of my range.

If the gold is too bling, I'll just have to ride faster so they 'blur' a bit more!

I see on Campag's website that the Shamal's are now available in a Ti finish - a definite improvement on gold !

I've never ridden Ksyrium ES, although having used Ksyrium Elite, Eurus and Fulcrum 3 over the last few years, I'd go with the either the Fulcrums or Campag wheels, no question. In my experience, they are a stiffer wheel, and tough as nails !
Do you know the five lamps ?

Or you could wear white shorts and shoes to distract peoples attention away from the gold wheels?

  • I have the gold shamals. With the right bike (black or white) they look superb. quite individual. anyway, we'll be seeing lots more shamals in the roads next year i suspect.

they are better wheels than ESs. Suspect on more or less on a par with Zeros (haven't ridden), but cheaper, fractionally lighter, and possibly a touch more aerodynamic (these last two are probably so slight they don't matter).

Buy whichever of those two suits your bike/pocket would be my advice.

I went for Shamals ordered today from Parker. For £529, they're mega light (1395gms the pair I think), and have good reviews re. stifness and reliability. Yeah, they're gold, but sod it. They're the only ones in the range that I was after that no one's had a bad word to say about - 'cept the colour! I'll live with it!

Heard so much bad press for the ESs gotta say, and a lot of good press about the Zeros, but your choice is sooo bling mate, good luck to ya. And as you say you'll get used to them.
  • I think mine look good. Don't like bling myself but work fine here:

Yeah - a great test, and good to see some scientific background to it as well.
