Going singlespeed off road?

What's the verdict on singlespeed off road, can it be done? I'm thinking of converting to singlespee for mountian biking, I tend to go to the peak district, is it achievable on a singlespeed?

And what's the choice out there, I like the look of the Orange P& One, anyone know of any others?
