How to carry a cable lock safely

I use a cable lock which I usually leave at work. It's one of these:

I can think of no way of safely carrying it other than stuffed in the back of my bag (slung over my shoulder. Even then, if I have a crash I suspect that the Road, cable, spine combo could be painful. That, and the fact that my waistline won't allow it, is why I don't secure it roundmy waist like a number of people I see riding about.
I don't want to use panniers - any ideas?

How about some velcro adjustable straps round two parts of your frame, top + seat tube for example, like these here:

Either the small or the large ones should do the trick

I's say try and get it attatched to your frame. I asked the same question a bit ago about my D lock - I decided to frame mount it. You're very correct about the potential for thoracic spine injury if it's in your backpack.0
