Puncture repair and getting a tyre to 'sit' properly on the

Apologies if I get my terminology wrong...

Had my first puncture on my new bike the other day so went to change the inner tube. It's a hybrid bike with racing wheels (700 x 20) and all was going well until I tried to put the tyres back on. Where the valve was the inner tube was just a tiny bit bigger/less flexible and I couldn't get the tyre to fit snuggly on the rims. It kept 'popping out'. In the end I've just about managed it but could only get the pressure up to about 90. The other tyre I can still pump up to 115 quite easily.

I've ridden to work (a good 6 miles) and it held up OK to that. Will it have 'settled' into position now and will I be OK to pump it up still further?

Thanks all.

Let the air out, push the valve up into the rim and the bead of the tyre will pop down over the base of the valve and all will be well.

700x20? Those surely aren't the tyres which came with a hybrid - why so ridiculously narrow (even most road racers use a 23 section)?

Anyway back to the point - it sounds like what you missed was pushing the valve stem back into its hole when trying to seat that bit of tyre. Doing that pushes that thick bit of tube up towards the top of the tyre and away from the rim, thus allowing space for the tyre beads to sit down in the right place.

So simple! Thanks to you both.

Aracer...looking at it again...they are 700 x 20/28 and I've got 700 x 23 innertubes. You are clearly an expert and I doff my cap to you.
