couldn't sleep, it rained a bit got a pun*ture just as I arrived at work... you know annoying but not the end of the world

a friend then sent me this about his journey
1. With bike on shoulder, ended up going down the stairs on my arse
2. Shoe didn't engage with pedal on mounting bike, got saddle in crotch
3. Found it was lightly raining.
4. Approached the Limehouse link on my thigh - for the uninitiated that is 20mph to stop in a meter and a half using only the front brake on wet pavement.
5. On recovery got all of the next 8 traffic lights on Red - After dropping all your weigh on your leg the last thing you want to be doing is stopping and starting.
6. Got into work and found that my overshoes have split the sole from the heal of my biking shoes.

I want to go home.

ouch

Anyone else got any tales of woe... when it all just goes to sh!t?

  • Cycling over london bridge on a greasy morning in March this year. Moving at a fair clip. Ahead of me a bus signalled to pull out into the central lane. It had plenty of room so on I rolled. It started to pull out and so I whipped through the opening gap....

Only to see the back of another stationary bus ahead. Bus in front. Bus to the side. High kerb to the left.

I started braking. Started skidding. Hit the bus, went up and over. Managed to get my head out of the way and shoulder-charged the bus. Then sat back down and marvelled at my narrow escape. My hands didn't even leave the handle bar of my Brompton.

Until I realised I couldn't move my left arm.

A very helpful passer by called an ambulance...

Long story short: this Christmas I should have the plate removed from my collar bone now the four fractures have healed.

Managed to get back on the commute 8 weeks after the original operation. I can go for about an hour on the road bike, before the pain really starts to kick in. Am building up my strength steadily.

I can't beat that one although I have had another bad day today.

Puncture about a mile and a half from home. No Problem swapped in the spare tube.
Wasn't able to pump up the tube as the pump has decided to not pump.
Wheeled/Ran the bike a mile back to a petrol station to use their compressed air. But stupidly I hadn't checked both side of the tire and found the bead had popped off the rim, by the time I sorted this out timer had run out on compressor.
No more change to try again.
Wheeled/Ran the bike up the massive hill to home and sorted it out. On getting on the bike AGAIN to leave found that somewhere in all of that I have buckled the rear wheel.
No option for a lift in nd only just enough time to get to work on time if I realy pushed. I disengaged the back breaks (which were binding) and road to work with front breaks only.

I now have 2 days off work to try and sort things out, but no idea how to sort the buckle and no money to take it in to have it done.

Assuming it's not terribly buckled, then getting a wheel trued at your LBS will only cost you a few quid. Less than a tenner for sure. Admittedly if you don't have a tenner spare, then that's not much help to you.

Maybe ask your LBS how much they charge first, but I've never paid more than a tenner for a wheel true at my LBS :D

I had the exactly the same thing happen to me after my first puncture on this bike. My 25min commute turned into a 1hr45 commute with 2 bust tubes and a buckled wheel.

Not quite as bad as others buy I nearly went up the ass of a car who decided to stop suddenly just by a patch of diesel on the road. Got over that scare then crossing 3 lanes of stationary traffic a car decides to shoot up the forth lane and I have to stop so hit the brakes and a choice of unclipping or 'resting' on the boot of the car beside me, the car boot won!

On another occasison I had a puncture less than 1/2 mile from home on the way out. Replaced the tube and knew what had caused the puncture, the bead of the tire so put some card inbetween the tyre and tube and all was good till I started to ride home and the dreaded hiss again, this time with no spare tube. 4 miles on a flat tyre, the last mile was on tyre only as the tube came out and got caught around cassette.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Turns out it will be 11.60 - close enough to a tenner for me, the kids could stretcht to that ;)
