Hi there, got a Trek4300 in 2002/2003.
Bike shop didn't inform me I should make regular chain changes to save wear on cassestte and crank set, so its probably all failry warn. Basically it does jump when pedalling real hard.
As I have no way of guaging what is too worn or how worn it is, so I'm kind of tempted to try a new chain and if that don't work replace chain cassette and crank set.
Whilst I'm handy with spanners I'm not savvy when it comes to components, what to choose or how to match them together (I assume a fluid drive crank needs a particular chain and cassette to work properly.
SO my question to you is
How do I find the spec for my bike and so what bits to buy for like for like replacement
OR if I've no ned to go for like for like,
How do I match up componeentsso they working properly together.
Thanks for you time

If it's jumping, the cassette's gone. Rings *might* be, but it's unlikely unless it's been jumping for aaages.
The crankset wont mind which chain and cassette you use. To get the derailleurs to work, you need to use a shimano compatible one, which is anything but Campagnolo, essentially.
To find out what you need, first count how many cogs are on the cassette. It's likely to be 8 or 9. You need to get another one the same.
Then count how many teeth are on the biggest cog and the smallest cog. You don't need to get another one the same, but if you want to, this is how the gear ratios are defined.0 -
So no idea of how to find the bikes spec?
