Krysirum SL Bearings
I bought a pair of Mavic Ksyrium SL wheels two and a half years ago and they have been excellent, until May this year. I was on the second day of an end to end ride, climbing Red Hill by Bristol Airport, when I noticed a clicking noise coming from the back wheel. By Hereford it had become noisier and I identified that it was a faulty wheel bearing. I continued all the way to John O’ Groats with it getting no worse. On my return home to Yeovil in Somerset I checked out Chicken Cycles website to find a shop who could service the wheel. John’s Bikes in Bath had the shortest waiting list so I booked it in there. Six days and about 90 cycling miles after the new bearings had been fitted, they failed. Also the freehub was jamming and snatching the chain, which was a new development. I returned the wheel to John’s Bikes and they fitted a new set of bearings. The bearings seemed nice and smooth but the freehub was noisier than before. I thought this may be temporary and may have settled down. It did not. Six weeks and about 350 cycling miles later, heading west out of Glastonbury, the clicking returned and as before got noisier. Now I probably should have gone back to John’s Bikes and hoped for third time lucky but must admit I had lost faith in them. Ralf Colman’s in Taunton had a three week waiting list but were confident they would be able to get a set of bearings ordered in ready to do the job. I duly delivered the wheel and learned the bearings had not arrived so I may have to wait another couple of days. 10 weeks and numerous phone calls later I’m still waiting. Apparently they have a supply problem with their distributor Chicken Cycles.
My questions are:
1/ Does anyone know if there is a problem with the bearings Mavic use?
2/ Could Johns Bikes have had a duff batch of bearings?
3/ Is Ralf Colman’s having difficulties getting these bearings because Mavic’s aren’t supplying, as their replacement bearings are suspect?
4/ Does anyone know where I can source a set of rear wheel bearings to enable Ralf Colman’s to complete the job?
5/ Has anyone had a similar experience with these wheels?
6/ Should I shell out for a new freehub or see if it gets quieter with the third set of bearings.
There is a hell of a lot to be said in favour of cone, cup and two sets of loose bearings like we used to have. I probably could have gone ceramic with what it has and will cost me.
