Short angle stems

After some advice please.
I have a GT Zascar and the stem seems very long compared to my mates Trance 2. Even with the seat as forward as possible i am strached out abit.
I seemed to be able to climb better on his ( fell more "on top" of the bike).
Just wondering if buying a short one with more angle would be better?
If so any recommendations?
