Spokes

I have recently broken a spoke on the rear wheel of my bike. I have visited two Bike shops neither will sell single spokes. The more professional shop in Preston offered me a gross of spokes, I refused this generous??? offer.
Apparentley the other alternative is to buy a new wheel. My options on this are limited is my bike is 27 years old. The wheel is 27 inches x 1 inch, I am sure these are not manufactured any more.

it sounds like the size required is an odd size that they will have to order in and they dont want to get in a box of spokes just to sell one spoke.
try and find out what length of spoke you need and then ask about."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Ridiculouse!
I have an Airnimal with 24" (520) wheels, and always carry a couple of spare spokes in the seatpostfor the very reason tha iit is an unusual size.
I have yet to use them. Mos shops have had a spoke to fit, or have been able to "roll" or cut one down.He that buys land buys many stones.
He that buys flesh buys many bones.
He that buys eggs buys many shells,
But he that buys good beer buys nothing else.

Are these chain shops, or local ones?If I had a stalker, I would hug it and kiss it and call it George...or Dick

Simply not true. They will build a wheel to your own spec.0 -
If it's a 27in wheel with a shallow rim, then the problem really will be that the shop doesn't have any spokes that are long enough.
The rim is 4mm larger in radius than a 700C and the spokes have to be longer as a result.
There's not a lot the shop can do about that. Wholesalers won't sell them a single spoke the right length (hence the offer of a gross - that's the pack size the shop would have to buy and you'd leave them with 143 spokes they'd never sell), and they can't cut and roll spokes from stock.
If you can adjust your brake pads down 4mm, you should buy a new 700C rear wheel and tyre, or even a pair.John Stevenson0 -
As a brompton rider I suffer the same problem so when you come accross one ok for your bike best grab a few for spares..In Edinburgh I once had the offer by a LBS to "make" me a spoke if I hadthe time to waitjc0

you're wasting your time with both those shops, you want a small independant bike shop.
hewitts probably being the nearest, i use one in accrington and can get spokes of almost any length.0
