How close do you need to get to a bus/car/cyclist to effectively draft? I keep getting stick-thin lycra types hanging on my tail, then passing in a flurry of aerobic efficiency

It's just a hill. Get over it.

It will depend on the size of the object in front. i.e.- a bus is huge and you will be able to draft it from a few metres back. But a cyclist is small and you will have to be within a few feet of thir rear wheel.

The closer you get the better the drafting will be. BUT, if you are 3 inches away from the back of a bus (doing 30mph) and it brakes  - you will have a sore head!!! :!:

imagin a triangle of equal sides projected from the back of a bus.
anywhere withing that is going to give to a hell of a free ride but you've seriously got to watch what your doing. I sometimes get 40 over a mile stretch going out of manchester but only becuase its against the traffic - its not big and its not clever but bloody good fun every now and again.
