1. First time up Holme Moss - mother of all headwinds most of the way up too, managed about 4mph at one point...but I got to the top
2. First time over 50mph - and managed it twice, coming down Holme Moss on the Derbyshire side (50mph chasing a guy who'd overtaken me at the top.....nearly caught him too :!: ) and dropping down into Dunford Bridge from the Woodhead Pass (52mph :? )
3. 2,000 miles on the odo, which also means 500 miles on the road bike
Sadly got cramp on the way back, but with 3,500ft of climbing in 34 miles I'm not too disappointed......tomorrow morning I might be regretting it though

Just thought i'd say well done to a fellow Yorkshireman/woman, nobody else seems bothered , it's sounds like a mighty fine effort to me , good on yer.0

Well done, sounds like a great achievement.0

Well done - 52mph is well fast! I've not managed that yet even on closed roads.0

Congrats,
Can't wait till i hit my first 1000 miles, let alone 3000 dont suppose you have a gps plot of that route? or have it marked on some online website?0 -

55??
What sort of gear inches are you running there?
Were you riding in a full lycra suit?!
That's awesome! I bottle it around 30.0 -
35 down a lovely hill near me...about 1 mile down hill...it's great as long as it's quiet so I can take a strong primary position, if I get pushed into the left of the lane I have to bunnyhop some nasty potholes...
Reckon if I was on a proper road bike I could easily go faster.0 -

To do that speed you can forget about gears as you will spin out on biggest gear. It is more about the bike and aero position you get into to get speed.0 -
I Spin out at around 30, anything after that is down to physics. Managed around 50 on my road bike going down Glen Ogle on the road (Still intend on returning to do the old railway).
I am around 6' and a pretty effective Air Brake, a mate who is around 5' 4" tends to fly past me on descents, though that is also partly to do with him not bottling it so "early".Do Nellyphants count?
Commuter: FCN 9
Cheapo Roadie: FCN 5
Off Road: FCN 11
+1 when I don't get round to shaving for x days0 -
52mph is insane. Fastest I've ever got was about 42 and that felt bloody quick.0
-
well i ran out of gears, but i got as low as possible on the bike so that might have had somethin to do with it!0
-
I managed 43 on the C2C route, running down into Nenthead, I had to bunny hop the cattle grid and my wheel rims were so hot I burnt my fingers on them checking the brakes afterwards. Good pub at the bottom there for hero stories. Frightening as hell - well done on breaking 50!0

52? That gives me the hebee jeebes.0

Quite right - forget pedalling, although it helps to get as much momentum as you can before you spin out....then it's getting down on the drops, tuck your elbows in, get your head as low as you can and hope there's no potholes / sheep / people in your way! Both hills are long and very steep (1:8-1:9), and with no significant bends.
I'm 6' and 16 stone so my air braking ability is significant, but the extra weight helps you gain momentum quickly at the top.
Adrenalin is a wonderful thing0 -
My fastest is 40mph on the steep downhill from the Cow and Calf on Ilkley Moor to Ilkely Town Centre. That's on A Spesh Sirrus. About 90 minutes of steady shallow climb up from Leeds for a few minutes of pure white knuckle. I certainly wouldn't want to go any faster.0
-
That looks an awesome route! Only recently discovered the Peak District- can't wait to get back there! 52 mph- amazed you could see anything! If i get above 35 my eyes start streaming (must have been a heel of a rush though- respect!).0

I thought I'd google cycle speed, and came across this article on recumbents and the fact they were banned in 1934:
The highest flat speed (flying start) for a traditional bike is just under 52mph!
The highest flat speed (flying start) for a recumbent is listed as: 81mph !!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recumbent_bicycle
According the Mr. Sheldon Brown, with a 700x23c, you could achieve the following speeds at a theoretical 100rpm - though to hold it steady at 100rpm would be a feat in itself:
62T chainring /10t rear: 48.5mph
72Tx10t: 56.3
All you need to now is find a bus to get you to the top!!
I'm surprised that recumbent racing isn't popular!0
