Phoned Paul Hewitt cycles earlier today to get some advice about wheels upgrade for my Spec Allez Elite after reading recommendations for using them on here. I would have to say that they were extremely helpful, so much so that I ended up ordering a pair of Mavic Open Pro ceramic rims on ultegra hubs! Should have known better than phoning to ask I suppose. I had previously been looking at factory built such as Fulcrum, Eastons, Aksiums and Ksyriums but after conversation on phone decided to go with handbuilt.

Downside - wheel builder on holiday for a week :(

    Not at all!

Was a bit vague but then par for the course I suppose at this stage. Will get a phone call and confirmed exact price when sent out but £180 give or take a quid or two and £26 for 105 cassette fitted as well to save me buying tools and having hassle changing one from originals so will have full spare set of wheels should I need to leave good ones in for truing etc. All in all less than I was looking to spend on factory built. I had posted a topic here asking opinions and at that time was willing to spend £300 on factorys so I'm happy with what he said and money in pocket too!

    Well worth the wait IMO

The wheels on my Cheviot tourer from there are handbuilt by him, approching 7000 miles on them and not a deflection in sight, and I've given them some hammer!

    Ding Dong!!!

The more I hear about them the better they sound! They might not be covered in a bling name all over the rim but at the end of the day it's the performance that matters. With the money I saved I've ordered a USE Exposure Joystick Maxx and a Smart 1/2 watt rear light for the dark nights.

  • Last week I had a very similar conversation with Paul. After reading all the recommendations about him over the years I was more than happy to order open pro on veloce. Mine are also being built when he gets back, but never mind, I am pretty sure he deserves a great holiday. Looking forward to getting the wheels though.

What are his prices (roughly) of the lighter wheels (1500g-ish)?

Not sure about other prices. I just told him I was looking for a decent set of wheels and what i currently had. Told him I rode mostly 40 - 50 mile training rides, 17 mile (each way)commute now and again shifts permitting and hopefully more frequent sportives next year, also told him height and weight so he'd get a better idea. he suggested Mavic Open Pros on Shimano 105 hubs but I preferred the Ultegra for not much more. Well worth a phone call.

Well at least with a phone call your guaranteed a response. I emailed them (mostly as I prefer everything in writing) looking for a quote for a high spec road race build and have never heard a thing!! Guess they must be too busy with all the phone calls
