Cogs digging in Pro II hub
Prowler

I had a 9 speed shimano (deore?) cassette stuck on Pro II hub in the rear. When I got the cassette unstuck I found some nasty notches where the sprockets had dug into the splines of the freewheel body.
Is the freewheel body faulty or is it somehow 'incompatible' with the cassette?
Does Hope not have the freewheel as a spare part? Could not find one at CRC.

it is normal. as hope say you should use a cassette that has a carrier and not use the ones with the seperate cogs. so that is XT and up from shimano and the top level sram cog set.
just file the edges smooth and fit an XT cassette."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

S**t, did not know about that. Are those type of cassettes available as 8 speed as well?0

if you look you might find the odd one some where."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

just as a note there is a steel body available if needed. BUT it is not the Trials one as that is a different width."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Perhaps now would be a good time to go 9sp if you're unable to get an 8sp cassette with carrier?
Remember that it's just your chain, cassette and shifter that need changing. The mech will do both.0 -
I've got this Deore LX casette on my Pro 2 hub - is that OK?
Apologies for the daft question, not sure if this hub has a "carrier" or not.

Edit - reason I ask is that 6 of the cogs are held together (on what I guess might be called a carrier) and the page I linked to on the Shimano site mentions a "carrier". Have said all that, just checked the hub and there are a few nicks in it - nothing major though and the cassette came off pretty easily. Thanks.0 -

you hub does not have a carrier."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

if you look at an XT or an XTR cassette you will see that a number of the cogs are attached to a lump of alloy or other material so as to spead the loads from the big cogs."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Thanks. Glad I read this thread before I damaged my hub too much.0

Yup, noticed that when I was changing my casette over. There was a little slip with the wheels saying not to put anything worse than XT/SRAM equivalent. Thankfully it was an XT one I was putting on the Pro II's, so 'tis all good!0

A bit like this???
Only just noticed this thread. But this happened to me a while ago. Apparrently hope put a sticker on the hub when its sold saying not to use a steel cassette block with the aluminium cassette-hub body. But because most people have thir wheels built for them and wheel builders often remove this no one knows about it untill its too late. Like me.
I've now got a steel replacement. It was a while ago but I think that the steel unit weighed about 145g compared with the 95g that the aluminium unit weighed. A small price that I paied gladly.
Sorry to say that the financial cost was not equally low - think I forked out about £45 for this at the time.
You have been warned!!!0 -
have a pro 2 on the enduro but the cassette is a sram x7 or something of that same area. do the notches cause damage to the hub body in to the effect that it needs replacing? the sticker that came with my pro 2 says its just cosmetic, but thought i'd best check.I said hit the brakes not the tree!!

it depends on how far you let it go."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

I found my xt cassette bit in as well, but I read somewhere that it only happens initially and then the metal hardens. So if you file off the burrs that cause it to jam, (ie anything at a larger radius than the splines from the axle) and re-fit your cassette you shouldn'tt have any more problems.0

i just got the xt today crc said it has six sprockets on the carrier but it only has five do this meen the top four sprockets will dig in to my pro11 hub?play hard ride hard0

i shouldnt have thought so, seeing as the bigger sprockets take most of the load i think. just a guess but thats what i'd assume. have bouht an xt cassette noe, so will be fitting it tomorrow.
lol, after this thread so many people have changed their cassette.I said hit the brakes not the tree!!
