worth upgrading ridgeback cyclone?

Greetings all,
I hope this is the best forum for this question.
I've got a Ridgeback Cyclone that I've been using primarily as a commuter / utility bike for the past 4 years, averaging maybe 50 miles a week. Lately, I've been getting into the cycling thing a bit more, taking longer rides on the weekend, etc. I've started thinking about doing some short tours and maybe and audax or three next year.
Up to this point, my trusty cyclone has been fine. I've added some midge bars to it with DiaCompe 287v levers, but otherwise the bike is all original. The components are starting to get long in the tooth, esp the rear wheel, so I am thinking it's either time to upgrade the cyclone, or go shopping for a new bike.
I'm inclined to upgrade as things break to a relatively high level (mavic xc717 wheels with shimano xt hubs for example), with an aim to treat myself to something like a Bob Jackson frameset in a year or two, and transfer the upgraded components to it then.
Or...
Replace the Cyclone entirely for something else. However, with my current budget, the level of components would likely take a hit (deore instead of XT for example), in turn getting a better frame.
I should probably mention that I am ultimately looking for one bike that will serve as a good "all rounder". Reliability and comfort is much more important than speed.
I'm happy doing most of the upgrades myself.
Is the Cyclone frame worth upgrading at all?
Any advice would be most welcome.
