Hi guys,

Can someone point me to some reading about chainsets, i.e. how to work out whats compatible with what.

I see shimano derailerson the back with sram or other cassettes etc and would like to know how you work out what works with what?

I bet its a complicated subject but if there is some reading somewherethat could helpas a start would be really apriciated :D

Thanks

will search for that site, is it you just need to make sure EVERYTHING is 8 speed or 9 speed for example.

Having a 8 speed rear, and a 9 speed front chainring , with an 8 speed chain wont work?

    Thanks

oh right, is the chainring the only thing that is independant of speeds? as long as you have a rear derailer, chain and cassette thats the same speeds (i.e. 8 ) then this will work with the front derieler?

    Thanks

Shimano derailleurs are speed independent too. The only things that count are the cogs at the back, the shifter, and with 9/10 speed drivetrains, the chain. Everything else should be fine.

My bike has a 7 speed Sram cassette on an 8 speed Shimano hub (with spacer), a 6/7/8 speed Sram chain, 8 speed Shimano rings and 7 speed shifters, with a 9 speed LX derailleur. My wifes bike has 8 speed Stronglight rings with 9 speed Shimano everything else. My road bike has 10 speed Campagnolo everything 8)

Head spinning a bit at the end there but i get the idea :D thanks a lot!

One more question sorry about the hubs, am i right in thinking you need to make sure the wheels will except the size of cassettes, i.e. that it has enough space to take a 10 speed cassette, or is that just the hub you need to check?

    Thanks

Any Shimano 8/9 speed hub will take a 10 speed cassette. They will also take a 7 speed cassette with a spacer. Some Shimano Dura Ace hubs will only accept 10 speed cassettes.

Campagnolo 8 speed is incompatible with later 9 and 10 speed, which are intercompatible.

Sheldon Brown's website can be a great help.
