UST Tyre Choices

Trying to work out wich UST tyres to use with stans no tubes. Currently looking at maxxis ignitor 2.35 and High Roller 2.35 super tacky.
Was thinking for running the Ignitor on the rear and high roller on the front as the only 2.35 lust versions I can find are the super tacky version, and I don't fancy that much rolling resistance on the rear.
Does anyone use these and have any advice on the above set up ? Ignitor front and rear or the high roller on the front ?
BTW I am 13st and ride a Mongoose Teocalli super in a fairly abusive manner

are you aware that you dont need to use ust tyres with stans? you can use any tyre, which might open up your options.
i happen to really like high rollers, wide spaced tread = good mud shedding, big tread= loads of grip plus they are pretty lightweight in some versions.
i have used ignitors (although in 1.9 version) and dont know how a tyre with such shallow tread manages to grip at all but they do, really well. dont know what they would be like in the impending winter months tho.0 -
I ride round on Dartmoor and up at Afan and wales, also go to Haldon and Abbeyford woods at okehampton for a little "lite" freeride.
I ride quite hard and prefer larger volume tyres and, the weight is not a huge issue, Tubeless set up will from experience weigh about the same or a little less as a tyre and tube. Depends on the tyre used. I have just taken a set of Nobby Nics off as I put a large hole through the tread on the rear one and did not like the way the behaved when pushed hard in corners or over rocky terrain. I liked Continental Verts but found the compound a tad hard and slippy at places like Afan hence the interest in Ignitors and the high rollers always get a good write up.
I had stans on my old bike, on XC717 rims. I loved the benefits but god fed up with having to change the sealant often, and trying to get non UST tyres to seal. Ended up running the rims strips with UST Michelin All Mountains and bontrager super juice sealant. This set up was really nice to ride on, more traction, less rolling resistance ect and was totally dependable. Not one puncture, no such thing as pinch flats and they needed pumping once in a blue moon. But a bit pricey on tyres, those Michelin's don't last long0 -
I am having the same problems as you in choosing a 2.25-2.35 pair of UST tyres. I've used Michelin Mountain A/Ts and they fit well and inflate well but I don't like the way the front gives out without warning.
I have High Roller/Ignitor combo on my hardatil but because they are both reasonably hard, I've opted for the High Roller rear and Ignitor front.
I have also avoided Schwalbe because their lightweight casings seem prone to rock damage.
I think your choices come down to the two you've mentioned:
Ignitor 62a rear/ High Roller 42a front
Ignitor front and rear - the combo I'll probably go for
or
Non-UST single ply high roller 60a rear/High Roller UST 42a front
Michelin Mountain Extrem front and rear
One final thing that may help, one of the long-term bikes in MBUK has just been fitted with LUST Ignitors front and rear and so far the comments have been excellent."Internet Forums - an amazing world where outright falsehoods become cyber-facts with a few witty key taps and a carefully placed emoticon."0 -
I think I will go for the Ignitors front and rear then, and maybe get a High Roller for the front If I feel the need for more grip, or maybe for trips to Afan and onto planking. Note to Maxxis do A UST 2,35 high roller in 60a !!!!!!!0

.........and am going to be for some time. They where showing them as in stock when I ordered, but just got an email saying it would be the 20th of October before they get stock. No where else seems to have anys stock at moment in lust 60a.
Does anyone know what the Bontrager Big Earl's 2.35 are like? They do a tubeless ready version and what is the difference between the wet and dry versions.
Also just noticed that maxxis now do the advantage in 2.25 mmmmmmmmmm0 -
I've just ordered one from Chain Reaction which they reckon they have despatched!"Internet Forums - an amazing world where outright falsehoods become cyber-facts with a few witty key taps and a carefully placed emoticon."0

Finally got them on the bike and have been out for a ride. Cant really comment on rolling resistance or weight as I have a stinking cold so can't really say as my legs felt like lead. They do seem to have a lot more straight line grip than the Nobby Nics, and felt much more stable. That may be just down to them being ust tyres. They come up about the same size as a vert and the 60a compound is noticeably grippier on rocks, slate, and roots.
For the weight weenies the wheels weigh 150gr more than with the nobby nics on, that's with rim strip, rim tape and sealant and UST as apposed to the normal tyre. The tyres weighed 805gr as opposed to 570 for the nics0 -
I put an Ignitor LUST on the front of my bike last week and since then I have tried it out on all kinds of surfaces:
A lap of Rutland Water - tarmac and compressed harcore tracks
Jacobs Ladder/Roych Clough/Rushwap Edge - rock and mud
Woburn Sands - hardpack, loose leaves and sand
Chicksands - dual slalom and 4X tracks
Have to say, it seems a pretty good all-rounder. As for weight, my last tube tyres were Cinders at 760g so I've saved 115g including 10g for a rim strip."Internet Forums - an amazing world where outright falsehoods become cyber-facts with a few witty key taps and a carefully placed emoticon."0
