Which would be a better rim for a 16st XC rider? I know most of the strength and durability is in the wheel build but the choice is either;

ZTR Arch Rim/XTR Hub/DT Comp Spokes from wheelpro

or

DT EX 5.1 Rim/XTR Hub/DT Comp Spokes from merlin cycles

Very similar price from both for their respective pair so its just about the choice or rims.

Whaddya reckon?

I've got a set of XM719's on my Inbred. Still straight and true after 18months of abuse (the rear wheel was on my stinky for a few months), I'm not light either at 15stone.

Can you remember where you got them built?

additional - the wheelpro wheels come with free (£50 worth) XTR skewers.

  • XTR hubs come with the skewers wherever you buy them. As opposed to Hope etc...

719's on tune hubs (bombproof and the nice german man that makes them [Uli] will give you a set of the stronger, more expensive hubs for nowt if you manage to break the King and Kong hubs!)

Where am I able to get a set of the Tune wheels built in the UK? I think they may be a bit pricey for what i'm after but i'd like to look into it anyway.

    Cheers.

Poshbikes.com sell TUNE hubs. They are well expensive though (look here - http://www.poshbikes.com/product.php?id=17 ).

Cheaper (and lighter) than the Chris Kings that everyone ALWAYS mentions whenever someone asks about decent wheels.

As for the build, any deecent LBS should be able to build wheels but ask around as there will be good and bad wheelbuilders in every town. (The guy who builds mine used to put together the wheels for the England junior road team so he kinda knows what he is doing....)

  • My DT5.1's are doing well. I'm a light rider but they get some abuse from enthusiastic riding. they're still true after about 6 months. The mags say they're very tough, but can get chunks taken out by aberrant rocks. I'd say it comes down to the wheel builder. Which do you trust more?

Can you tell me where you got yours built and what your hubs are?

  • If you are talking about DT wheel sets have a look on the Merlin website for the Magura wheelsets, these are branded Magura but ar DT rims and Hubs and are cheap as chips for what you get, i have a set and it is a DT455 rim and DT onyx hubs they are really light and strong and i am 17 Stone, no trouble with them at all. I got them fully complete for £135 the pair with the 10% off offer they have at the moment. They also do another set that take a 20mm front hub for around £200 well worth a look. If you look at the individual parts prices they cost megabucks, also they are put together by DT themselves.
  • My hubs are Hope Pro II's. Super-tough, weatherproof and click annoyingly. They're Hope Hoops, so built up by Hope via some bikeshop they won't reveal the details of.
The wheelset comes in at about 2kg and £250

I've looked on the HopeGB website but I can't find where to order their products. I've seen their hubs on Wiggle and Wheelpro but as far as Hope Hoops go - it's all a mystery to me!
