I'm going to be buying a new bike soon. I have had a Mongoose Tyax for a while and I think I'm ready for an upgrade.
Is there any reason why I shouldn't buy this? http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/?fn=produ ... egoryId=39
Is there a more obvious choice that is better on spec for the same cash?
I will be using it for XC and trails. Nothing serious like racing.
Any thoughts?

The Merlin Malt4 IMO opinion as I own one is an excellent UK trail specific bike. It has received many plaudits and good reviews from various MTB related magazines. The Kinesis Kinesium frame has been round for a while now and Merlin see no need to change it yet as it still sells very well. £1043 for a full 08 XT and Reba race forks is a bargain. Merlin is a bike manufacturer as opposed to a retailer plus they only sell directly through themselves so they are able to reduce costs which make them extremely well priced for the spec. You are also able to have a fully bespoke spec if you get in touch with them directly.
Oh, and that picture does the bike no justice it looks a lot better in the flesh. The photographer should be ashamed.0 -
no reason why not from me, almost 1000miles on mine and nothing wrong with it yet0

I should have said, I'm looking at spending less than £900. the only upgrade I would get on the Malt 4 would be the black rims at an extra £18.

No experience of the malts, but i have a rocklobster and can't fault it or Merlin.
The RL is also well worth a look over the malt, especially the 853 if you fancy a steely.
Remember that if you are not getting the 0% finance you get an extra 10% off, so factor that into the price and you can afford an upgrade to XT.

Another Lobster rider here and im more than happy with it. Cant really speak for the Malt 4 ive never ridden one but i have seen a couple in the flesh so to speak and as someone above says, they really do look very nice indeed up close.
Merlin will happily chop and change ANY part of the bike to suit ur needs and/or budget with no hassle at all, they really are a friendly and helpful bunch0 -

I noticed you have a Malt 4 size 17" - I am looking at them at the moment and feel like I am between sizes (17" and 19"). How tall are you and how do you find the fit?
I am new to MTB so unsure - I'm 5 11 with inside leg of about 32".

blimey that's an old thread.
i'm just under 5'9" with about 31" inside leg.
19" should do you fine i reckon but try to test if possible0
