on my x7 shifters there is a hole where you replace the cables, should these have a screw or gromit in to stop the muck getting in. Mine are open so i have maybe lost the plugs

    Huh?

When new the shifters do come with little plugs over the hole through which you replace the cable, but they're far from neccesary. None of my shifters have them - i generally take them out the first time I replace the cable, and completely forget to put them back in.

i always replace them, and they are avalable. as it does keep the crud out.

maybe i should have added plugs to the stament.

yeah hit up ya local bike shop and order them if you feel they are that important. They only bad thing about sram shifters is that crappy little rubber bung. I personally throw them away once i have replaced the cable, i have never had any probs without them like.
