Hiya: i've posted this here for a bit of female advice! I'm after a new bike for road use & cycle paths with the option to go off road in the future. My current bike is an old, horrid, heavy man's raleigh (yuk, i know) ...so i'm really after somehting as light as possible. I was thinking of a hard tail & was thinking of a hard rock but i see some people say it's not that great. I also dunno what the best types of brakes would be? any suggestions? Thanks guys!

  • My hardrock sport hyd disc is great for the money

I bought it 6 weeks ago and have been using it twice a week an fairly hard trails. It has hit a tree and several rocks and is still A1

The components are not great but the frame is superb.

These things can be upgraded though but this bike is well worth the money.

If going light, I wouldnt get a HR!

Have a read of the What Bike thread in the buying guide, and think about testing some.
  • bit scared to say this but the carrera vulcan won what mountain bike budget bike of 2007 and came 3rd overall in all classes! it beat the hardrock hands down and carrera frames are made by merida and plus at the moment the 2007 range vulcans are only £200!! they have tektro disc brakes, 24 speed sx4 shifters and mechs and got potential for upgrades with quality frame set..just a thought..

ill agree with rich_zs01. i have the carrera kraken, and although now heavily upgraded, even in its initial state it was a great bike for the money. If you're lucky halfords will still have some left on offer. i got mine this time last year half price!

Trek 4300? Comes in WSD as well...I love mine, but I suppose that makes me very biased...
One day, I'm going to buy a cottage in a small village and become its idiot!

Cant see a full spec list, but from what I can see it looks to be a very well specced bike for that money.

Had a quick google, and WMB tested it last year:

And that is a good review! Frame was praised, as wasgood riding position. Certainly worth looking at, and testing if possible.
  • The Scott Contessa range have pretty light frames. They start at the Contessa 50 at £249, but you may be able to get last years 40 (originally £349) for about £300 now.
Real men keep it RIGID !!
