How does 'Adjustable Travel' work?

Looking at getting some Revelations, partly due to their ability to adjust travel. My current steed has 100mm travel, and I don't want to mess up geometry. However, having spoke to two shops, I am still unclear as to whether dropping Revelations to 100mm will shorten the leg, or simply stop the fork fully compressing. Which part of the travel is restricted?
Also, is this method of adjustment consistent to other make / models of forks or just the Revelations?
The reason I want 130mm is for future proofing as I am considering a new frame next spring, but I need to fork now - my current fork is shafted. Would appreciate unbiased advice compared to shocking advice from one shop to this question - 'its hard to say, really'.

No other fork in particular. I liked the reviews / looks of the Revelations.
Just wondered whether reducing the fork length / height was the normal way. Is it a case of say, Manitou / Fox doing it one way and Marzocchi doing it another? Useful for other people, but suppose I am not too bothered now if the Revelations work the way I hoped. Cheers for quick response.0 -
normal is to reduce the height of the fork."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
