Back ache = buy new stem?

Rode CwmCarn yesterday afternoon, I think its something like the 5th time I've done it but first time on my new hardtail, climbing was great but I got a sharpish pain in my lower back.
Just a quick check before I splash out to see if buying a shorter stem will relieve my pain? I'm using something like a 95mm at the moment and I know the frame (on-one inbred 456) recommends a 60-80mm stem but thought this was more down to handling characteristics.
Would the number of spacers on the fork steerer under the stem make much difference as well?
thanks

were you riding a hardtail the other times or full sus, if it is your first time on a hartail it might just be not having rear sus and might just take a bit of getting used to...
if not did you have your seat/seat height set up right?

It was full sus the other times but the pain started pretty early and cwmcarn is straight into a long tech climb so don't know if the rear sus would make any difference. the seat height might be a touch low but wasn't too bad I don't think. maybe i should try a local trail with the saddle up even more. I did find myself moving forward on the saddle though to try n straighten back and relieve pain.

when riding your back should be arched
  • i would go to a good osteopath/physio & get your back looked at and get them to sort you out a good training programme of back stretches and core strength exercises, it would be a longer term fix than trying a different stem.

Its just weird how I had nothing like it when riding my full sus on the same trail and pushing myself harder.

my neck always aches when i go out riding, despite different stem lengths abd saddle heights. im just trying to live with it at the minute, although it probably isnt the best thing to be honest!
I said hit the brakes not the tree!!

check ya saddle is flat, maybe try diff saddle postions on the rails.

a shorter stem may help as you maybe over stretching

are your bars too high or too low? again try playing around with ya spacers n stack height.

is the bike the correct size for you?

It could just be down to riding a hradtail again.

I know all about how uncomfortable back pain is i have slipped a disc n suffered from trap nerves before and have to constantly watch what i am doing with my back, had to quit bmx cause of it.

stretch before and after riding i find that can help too, but discomfort is nae good like.

    hope that sorta helps........

Inbreds do have a longer top tube than most, so you normally use a shorter stem. I'm 6ft tall and ride an 18" with a 70mm stem with 1" Riser bars.

I'm 5'7" and I've got the 16" which is correct. I might grab a 60mm stem or something thanks HC

that onone stem is lovely looking and lets be honest, apart from length theres not mch more to go on with the lowly stem.

if i neet to replace a stem, that'd be the one i went for.
  • Also, it could be your backpack.

I ride with my animal bag, which isnt a biking bag. If it is overfilled or if the straps are loose, it gives me lower back pain.

    Just a suggestion.

I am using a short freeride stem though.
